Rodrigo Resende

Biography
Rodrigo Resende began Judo at the age of four under the guidance of his father, Geraldo Resende, and soon trained directly with Master Takeshi Miura, one of the most respected Judo masters in the world. As a teenager, he added Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to strengthen his groundwork, and the art quickly became a permanent part of his journey. While living in Salvador, he trained under Masters Ricardo and Edson Carvalho, further deepening his skills. His years in Brazil also took him through academies in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, where he trained with and competed for top clubs, representing his state, university, and country at national and international levels. Rodrigo earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Master Max Trombini of the Cia Paulista Team and his Judo black belt under Master Miura.
At Vanguard, Rodrigo leads the academy as Head Instructor, bringing decades of experience from two martial arts. His teaching emphasizes strong fundamentals, effective application, and the mental discipline required for growth both on and off the mats. Students know him for his detailed instruction, patience, and ability to inspire them to reach higher levels of skill and confidence.
Beyond the academy, Rodrigo serves as a police officer with the Edmonton Police Service, where he is recognized as a subject matter expert in control tactics, arrest procedures, and defensive training. His dedication to martial arts, community, and service reflects his belief that these disciplines are about much more than sport — they are a way to build character, resilience, and respect.
